Cadent Gas is the UK’s largest natural gas distribution network and has been an industry leader since 2017. The company supplies gas to 50% of the UK’s customers, serving 11 million homes and businesses through almost 82,000 km of pipeline infrastructure. Operating across the North West, West Midlands, East of England, and North London, Cadent Gas manages thousands of critical remote sites, including telemetry rooms, control rooms, valves, and PRI/PRS areas.

For over a decade, Cadent managed the security of its estate using traditional mechanical padlocks. Over time, the system exposed growing weaknesses: tracking physical keys became increasingly complex, and access control deteriorated, resulting in operational delays and heightened risks for field personnel.

Requests

Cadent Gas required a secure, scalable, and fully certified access control system capable of managing access across about 10,000 remote sites distributed nationwide. The project demanded stronger traceability, enhanced control over access permissions, and full compliance with the strict safety standards of critical Oil & Gas infrastructure.

The challenge was further amplified by the nature of the environment involved. Many Cadent Gas sites are classified as ATEX zones - areas where the presence of flammable gases or potentially explosive atmospheres requires strict adherence to rigorous safety and risk management protocols.

In addition, the solution needed to support a complex nationwide rollout, guarantee reliability in harsh outdoor environments, and integrate with internal enterprise system, enabling automated management of the access rights lifecycle. This ensures that organisational changes are promptly reflected in access permissions, reducing operational risks associated with lost or unmanaged keys.

Our contribution

ISEO delivered a fully integrated access control solution built around LSA, the web-based software for access management, enabling the centralised management of all users and subcontractors, around 10,000 remote sites and almost 13,000 access points through a single system. The deployment included F9000 mechatronic padlocks and cylinders, specifically selected for their robustness and reliability in critical outdoor environments. To further streamline field operations, ISEO customised the MyLocken mobile app, providing operators with secure and intuitive access management directly on site.

The solution was fully integrated with Cadent Gas’s existing enterprise systems, enabling automated management of the access rights lifecycle. This ensures that organisational changes are promptly reflected in access permissions, reducing operational risks associated with lost or unmanaged keys.

Safety has been a priority for Cadent Gas from the outset. The solution enables the company to enforce strict access protocols, demonstrate regulatory compliance, and maintain accurate records of who accesses each site, when, and with which authorisations, helping protect field personnel and support safer working conditions.

The rollout, managed by ISEO in partnership with installer CTR Services, was carried out in three phases across the UK and completed on time and within budget. In addition, ISEO provides Cadent with a dedicated Managed Service to support the ongoing administration and optimisation of the system. Delivered by a Europe-based team, this service guarantees high standards of data governance, responsiveness, and regulatory alignment, while offering a strategic advantage compared to providers that rely on resources located outside the EU.
